프랑스 정부는 2005년부터 EPV(Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, 살아있는 유산 기업)라는 공식 라벨을 운영하고 있습니다.

(Edmond Fallot)

Is There Still a Real "Made in France"?
Looking for genuinely French food and goods, still made by hand
There was a time when "Made in France" was a guarantee of quality worth queuing for. These days, that's less true — cheaper goods from abroad have crowded out a lot of what used to be a source of pride, and it's harder to point to something and say, confidently, this is the real thing.
But the real thing hasn't disappeared entirely. There are still things made only in France, by hand, sometimes across several generations of the same family. They're just harder to find.

How to Tell What's Real — the EPV Label
Since 2005, the French government has run an official label called EPV (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, "Living Heritage Company"). It's granted only to companies with rare, exceptional know-how, and must be renewed every five years. Roughly 1,300 companies across France currently hold it.
It spans eight sectors: raw materials and equipment, tableware arts, culture and communication, gastronomy, architectural heritage, fashion and beauty, furniture and decoration, and leisure and transport. Many of the brands below either carry this label or meet the standard it represents.
The Trap Hidden in the Name "Laguiole"
Nothing illustrates how hard it's become to tell what's real quite like the Laguiole knife.
"Laguiole" isn't a brand name
Under French law, "Laguiole" isn't a protected brand — it's a generic term for a style of knife, so anyone can use it. After World War I, the workshops in the village of Laguiole mostly closed, and production shifted to Thiers, about 200 km away. Today, more than 60% of the "Laguiole" knives on the market are actually made in Thiers.
It gets worse: some sellers import parts from abroad, do only final assembly near Laguiole, and still claim French origin.
That said, genuine handcrafted production does still exist. Workshops like Forge de Laguiole, Laguiole en Aubrac, and Fontenille Pataud keep the actual handwork alive. Checking for a maker's mark stamped into the blade, alongside a clear "Made in France," is the first thing to look for.

Still Genuine — Food
Edmond Fallot Mustard
Founded in 1840, this is the last independent, family-run mustard mill left in Burgundy — now in its fourth generation. It still grinds seeds on traditional stone mills, gentle enough not to crush the paste. Its Burgundy mustard, made with Burgundy-grown mustard seed and Burgundy AOC wine, holds a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

Still Genuine — Goods
Savon de Marseille
Only four factories in all of France still make it the traditional way — in large cauldrons, over a 72-hour process, using only vegetable oils: Fer à Cheval (1856), Savonnerie du Midi (1894), Marius Fabre (1900), and Le Sérail (1949). In 2011, these four founded the UPSM (Union of Marseille Soap Professionals) to distinguish genuine, traditionally made soap from the rest.

If You Want the Real Thing
Don't go by brand name or touristy packaging alone — look for the EPV label, and check whether "Made in France" is paired with an actual region or workshop name. As the Laguiole case shows, the name alone often isn't enough to tell.
The addresses, phone numbers, and websites listed for each workshop are for reference. Most are small operations in small towns, so please call ahead or check their official site for hours and whether visits are possible before you go.
For reference, the full list of EPV-labeled ("Living Heritage") companies is published as official open data by France's Ministry of Economy (data.economie.gouv.fr). If you're curious about a specific brand, you can search it there yourself.
