The Others: the 13th and the 20th
The Paris that begins where the tourist map runs out
Open a Paris visitor map and the inner districts are printed boldly: Louvre, Marais, Latin Quarter, Champs-รlysรฉes. Move outward and the detail thins until the map becomes plain grey.
This part goes into the grey. The 13th and the 20th hold few famous sights and a great many actual Parisians. Each also holds something no other district does: the largest Chinatown in Europe, and the most visited cemetery in the world.
1. The Largest Chinatown in Europe
Asian grocers and restaurants pack the ground floors beneath the tower blocks. It was built not only by Chinese arrivals but by Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Lao communities too, so several countries' signage overlaps within a single street.
A practical note for travellers: this is the surest escape route when French food starts to wear. A week of bread and cheese eventually produces a powerful craving for something with broth in it. When it arrives, come to the 13th.
If you're in the city around Lunar New Year, look up what's happening here. As a thing to encounter in the middle of Paris, it's unexpected enough to stay with you.
2. An Open-Air Museum
Over the past twenty years the 13th has earned a nickname: the open-air museum. A programme of monumental murals here uses the full flank of apartment buildings as canvas.
And here's a tip for anyone who has followed this series.
Part 3, dissecting the metro, noted that the metro is fast but the window shows you a black wall. There is an exception. Line 6 runs above ground on a viaduct through this stretch, following the boulevard where the murals are thickest.
Murals here are replaced from time to time, which is why we've named no artists or works. Come back in a few years and the paintings may differ, and that is rather the point of the district.
3. Butte-aux-Cailles, a Village Inside Paris
The 13th is a district of high-rises, and yet in the middle of it a pocket of low houses and cobbled lanes survives: Butte-aux-Cailles.
Artists' studios and galleries, Art Deco buildings, cafรฉ terraces, and street art along every lane. There is even an Art Deco swimming pool fed by a hot spring. Few visitors come, so what you see is simply Parisians spending their evening.

- Manufacture des Gobelins — a tapestry workshop running for centuries. The district's name comes from it.
- Place d'Italie — the hub of the 13th and a transport junction. Start here and most of the above is walkable.
4. The Largest Green Space in Paris Is a Cemetery
On to the 20th, and the most counterintuitive fact in this series.
The word cemetery may give you pause. But Pรจre-Lachaise draws more than three million visitors a year and is generally counted the most visited cemetery in the world. To Parisians it functions largely as a park to walk in and sit down in.
It has hills and lanes, old trees grown thick, and paths that wander. Take away the headstones and it would read as parkland.
Where the name comes from
It opened in 1804 on the instruction of Napoleon I, and takes its name from Father La Chaise, confessor to Louis XIV.
Celebrity marketing, 200 years early
Here the story gets good. On opening, the cemetery was a complete failure.
Parisians judged it too far from the city and stayed away; only a few dozen burials took place at first. It feels central now, but two centuries ago this was outside town.
So the administrators tried something. In 1804, with considerable ceremony, they transferred the remains of Jean de La Fontaine and Moliรจre here — importing famous names to raise the standing of the place.
Who lies here now
The strategy did work eventually. Pรจre-Lachaise now holds these names.
| Field | Buried here |
|---|---|
| Literature | Moliรจre, La Fontaine, Balzac, Proust, Apollinaire, Musset, Colette |
| Music | Chopin, รdith Piaf, Jim Morrison |
| Painting | Pissarro |
| Film | Yves Montand, Simone Signoret |
| Others | Oscar Wilde, Champollion, who deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs |
Jim Morrison's grave remains among the most visited. Oscar Wilde's became famous for the lipstick marks visitors left on it, and now stands behind a glass barrier.
The cemetery is large and the paths are confusing. If you're looking for a particular grave, check the map at the entrance or note the location beforehand. Stumbling across one by chance is unlikely.
5. The Communards' Wall
At the eastern end of the cemetery stands a plain wall. No celebrated grave, no sculpture. It is the heaviest place in the cemetery.
28 May 1871
On the final day of the suppression of the Paris Commune, at the close of what is called the Bloody Week, 147 Commune soldiers and 19 officers were executed against this wall.
They were buried together in a common grave at its foot. No names, no individual stones.
The wall became a place of remembrance. An annual commemoration begun by surviving Communards and their families has continued ever since — for more than 150 years, people have gathered here each year.
Part 9, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, noted how much difference it makes to stand somewhere knowing what happened there. This wall is exactly that. Walk past without knowing and it is a wall; know, and it is where the most violent episode in modern Parisian history ended.
It's marked on the cemetery map, under its French name: Mur des Fรฉdรฉrรฉs.
6. These Two Districts Cost Almost Nothing
The 13th and 20th, by cost
| Place | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pรจre-Lachaise | Free | 44 hectares, the largest green space in Paris |
| Vincent-Auriol murals | Free | They're simply on the street |
| Chinatown | Free | Only the meal, and that's inexpensive |
| Butte-aux-Cailles | Free | Wandering the lanes |
| BnF exterior | Free | Reading rooms are separate |
Not one ticket in this entire part. The only such part in the series.
7. A Day on Foot and Rail
The 13th and 20th are not adjacent, so this one needs the metro. But part of the travelling is itself the sight.
From murals to the cemetery
- Place d'Italie — a sensible place to start the 13th.
- Boulevard Vincent-Auriol — walk the mural stretch, following the line of the elevated metro.
- Butte-aux-Cailles — continue on foot. Cobbled lanes and cafรฉs.
- Chinatown — over by the Olympiades. Eat here, whether it's lunch or an early dinner.
- Pรจre-Lachaise — by metro. Late afternoon gives good light and fewer people; check the closing time first.
- The Communards' Wall — the eastern edge. Worth making it your last stop.
The cemetery is larger and hillier than expected, so putting it at the end of a long day is demanding. If you'd rather not, take Pรจre-Lachaise in the morning and the 13th afterwards.
8. At the End of the Snail
That completes the districts. A last word, back to Part 1.
The first part described the twenty arrondissements as a snail's spiral beginning at the Louvre in the 1st and winding clockwise. If the inner end of that spiral was the Louvre, then its outer end is the 20th — where we've arrived today.
From the 1st to the 20th, inside to outside, one full turn. The aim of this series was to read a city in order rather than tick off a list of sights, and if you've come this far, the numbers on a Paris map should no longer look like only numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is there an entrance fee for Pรจre-Lachaise?
No, it's free. At 44 hectares it is the largest green space in Paris, and with over three million visitors a year it is counted the most visited cemetery in the world.
Q. Who is buried at Pรจre-Lachaise?
Chopin, Moliรจre, La Fontaine, Balzac, Proust, รdith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Yves Montand, and Champollion, among many others. The grounds are large, so check the map at the entrance if you're seeking a specific grave.
Q. Where do I see street art in Paris?
Boulevard Vincent-Auriol in the 13th. That single boulevard holds as many as 26 monumental murals, some 30 to 40 metres tall, and Line 6 runs above ground along it.
Q. Where is Paris's Chinatown?
Around the Olympiades in the 13th arrondissement. It is reckoned the largest in Europe and is the centre of Lunar New Year celebrations in Paris, built by Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Lao communities as well as Chinese.
Q. What is the Communards' Wall?
The wall where 147 Commune soldiers and 19 officers were executed on 28 May 1871 during the suppression of the Paris Commune. They were buried in a common grave at its foot, and an annual commemoration has continued ever since.
Q. Are the 13th and 20th safe for visitors?
Yes. They simply have fewer attractions and more residents going about ordinary life. The usual sense applies as in any city: take care late at night and mind your belongings.
Q. I want to see Paris cheaply. Where should I go?
Pair the 13th and 20th into one day. Pรจre-Lachaise, the mural boulevard, Butte-aux-Cailles, and Chinatown are all free, so you'll spend little beyond a meal.
That closes the districts. Part three is the final check before you go: choosing a guidebook, enjoying Paris for free, and how tipping works.
