Central France and the Alps, by Train
From one hour to five and a half, sorted by journey time
Our previous guide covered day trips from Paris and deliberately set a few places aside, marked "doesn't fit in a day". This guide is for those.
The same problem recurs here. Search for central France and you get Lyon, Orlรฉans, Vichy, Annecy, and Chamonix listed side by side. The geography is loose, and more importantly the journeys are nothing alike.
So once again we've reorganised by train journey time rather than region.
1. Journey Times at a Glance
| Destination | From Paris | Suggested stay |
|---|---|---|
| Orlรฉans | 1h04 at best | Day trip possible |
| Tours (Loire base) | 1h19 at best | One night |
| Lyon | About 2h (1h53 at best) | One to two nights |
| Vichy | About 3h | One to two nights |
| Annecy | Direct TGV, 3h30 to 3h45 | Two nights or more |
| Chamonix | No direct train, 5h30+ at best | Two nights or more |
Tours shows as "about 2 hours" — so why do we say 1h19?
Search and Tours comes up at around two hours on average. The fastest service is 1 hour 19 minutes. The gap exists because slower services and connections are folded into that average.
You get the short time only by booking a direct TGV. Choose on price alone and the trip can take nearly twice as long. It is the commonest trap in booking French rail.
2. Refining What We Said Last Time
The day-trip guide said "the Loire chรขteaux don't fit in a day." That still holds. But researching this piece sharpened the reason.
So the accurate advice isn't "the Loire is too far, skip it" but "base yourself in Tours and stay a night." Rather than commuting from Paris to manage a single chรขteau, drop your bags in Tours and cover three or four across two days.
Smaller chรขteaux like Azay-le-Rideau, whose charm is the way they sit reflected in water, only really repay an unhurried itinerary like that.

Around an Hour: Day Trips, Really
Close enough that they could have gone in the previous guide.
Orlรฉans
1h04 at best · the city of Joan of Arc
Closer to Paris than Provins, and yet it rarely appears on day-trip lists.
This is the city whose siege Joan of Arc broke, and the whole place is organised around that memory. Watching how France chooses to remember its most famous figure is the interest here.
Sitting on the Loire, it also works as a starting point for a chรขteau itinerary.
Tours
1h19 at best · base camp for the Loire
You go to Tours less for itself than as the base for touring the chรขteaux. Booking a room here and working outward is the standard approach to the Loire.
The old town is well preserved and makes for good evenings: a full day among chรขteaux, then dinner on a square back in town.

Two Hours: Lyon, Worth Every Night You Give It
Two hours from Paris, and the second city of France.
Lyon: four hundred hidden passages
About 2h (1h53 at best) · our strongest recommendation here
Lyon has traboules: hidden passages cutting through buildings, courtyards, and stairwells to bring you out on another street entirely. There are roughly four hundred of them in the city.
They began practically. In the Renaissance, merchants built them to link courtyards and reach the Saรดne quickly — and to move silk without it getting rained on.
Some are open to visitors today. From the street it's an ordinary door; push through and you find a Renaissance courtyard and a spiral stair. Vieux Lyon is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Many traboules remain private homes, so access and hours vary. Check at the tourist office which are currently open. People live there; pass through quietly.
Bouchons: what "gastronomic capital" actually rests on
Lyon's traditional restaurants
Lyon is called the gastronomic capital, and it is Paul Bocuse's city. But the root of its cooking isn't the grand restaurant. It's the bouchon, a plain neighbourhood eating house.
The form dates from the 16th or 17th century, and its origin is telling: bouchons served the silk workers of the Croix-Rousse, coming off shift at dawn and wanting a hot home-style meal. Filling regional food, not refinement, is the original brief.
They are still cramped, still noisy, and the menus are still short. Walk in expecting "gastronomic capital" and you may be puzzled. What's on offer here is accumulation rather than polish.
The Festival of Lights, if you come in December
Around 8 December, four days · all shows free
The Fรชte des Lumiรจres began as a religious act of thanks to the Virgin Mary and took its present name and form in 1999.
It runs for four days around 8 December, covering building facades across the city in light. And the shows are entirely free — there is no ticket to buy.
That matters for a winter trip. In the season when Giverny is shut and gardens have nothing to show, Lyon in early December is at its best of the year.

Three Hours and Beyond: the Journey Becomes the Itinerary
From here, travelling is part of the day.
Vichy: a spa town, and a name
About 3h
The spa first. Vichy began when Roman soldiers found the thermal springs effective. In the 16th century Henri IV created a royal office overseeing the kingdom's baths and springs, and the first bathing establishment followed soon after.
Its golden age was the Second Empire and Belle รpoque, 1852 to 1914, when Napoleon III made Vichy the premier spa resort in Europe. The Grand รtablissement Thermal, opened in 1903, took its exterior from Byzantine models. The architecture of that era still shapes the town.
That is what travel guides usually say. But the name "Vichy" carries something else as well.
July 1940 to September 1944
After France's defeat by Nazi Germany, the government headed by Marshal Philippe Pรฉtain established itself in this town, from July 1940 until the Allied liberation in September 1944.
It professed neutrality but collaborated with the Nazis, including to some degree with their racial policies. In French, "Vichy" still refers first to that period rather than to the water.
The town wasn't chosen for political reasons. It was chosen because a spa resort had a great many good hotels. With rooms in abundance, entire ministries could be moved in, and the hotels became government departments and agencies.
The very qualities that made this the finest resort in Europe are what turned its name into one of the heaviest words in modern French history.
Go for the thermal baths by all means. But this is a town where knowing changes the walk. We've made the same point at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Communards' Wall in Paris; Vichy belongs with them.
Annecy: the Venice of the Alps
Direct TGV, 3h30 to 3h45 · two nights or more
Named for its turquoise lake and the canals threading the old town. The medieval centre keeps its cobbles and its coloured houses, with water running between them.
A direct TGV makes it straightforward enough. But at three and a half hours each way, a single night wastes it. Give one day to walking or cycling the lake and another to going further into the mountains.
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc: there is no direct train
No direct service · 5h30 minimum at best
This is the most important warning in the guide.
You cannot reach Chamonix directly from Paris
No direct train runs from Paris to Chamonix. A change is required, and even the fastest combination takes over five and a half hours. A poor connection makes it far longer.
When you see Chamonix listed alongside Lyon under "central France", you can take it that the list was assembled without regard to distance.
The reason to go anyway is clear enough: the Aiguille du Midi cable car.
That's 2,800 metres in twenty minutes. You board in the village in short sleeves and step out onto permanent snow, with Mont Blanc apparently within arm's reach.
3. How to Combine Them
Visited one at a time from Paris, these cities become an exercise in travelling. Grouping them is the whole trick.
Suggested combinations
- Two days — the Loire
Paris to Tours, then three or four chรขteaux over a day and a half. Orlรฉans slots in easily. - Three days — Lyon alone
Two hours out means little time lost, leaving room to do the traboules and the bouchons properly. - Four days — Lyon and Annecy
Lyon sits on the way to the Alps. Two hours from Paris to Lyon, then onward to Annecy, is considerably easier than going straight through. - Five days or more — Lyon, Annecy, Chamonix
Adding Chamonix needs roughly this much time, and using Lyon as the staging point is the key to it.
4. Easily Missed When Booking
- Fastest and average differ sharply. Tours is the example: two hours average, 1h19 at best. Always check the duration on the booking screen.
- Cheap tickets are usually slow ones — stopping services or connections. Priced against a day of your trip, the direct train may be the cheaper option.
- Departure stations differ. Lyon and the Alps go from Gare de Lyon; the Loire from Austerlitz or Montparnasse. Allow time to cross Paris between stations.
- Book early. French rail fares move like airline fares. Once the dates are fixed, book.
- Check the season in the Alps. Cable cars and mountain infrastructure close for maintenance, particularly in the shoulder periods between winter and summer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How long is the train from Paris to Lyon?
About two hours by TGV, with the fastest service at 1 hour 53 minutes, departing from Paris Gare de Lyon.
Q. Can I take a train from Paris to Chamonix?
Not directly. A change is required and even the fastest combination exceeds five and a half hours. Routing through Lyon with a night there is the better plan.
Q. What are the traboules in Lyon?
Hidden passages running through buildings, courtyards, and stairwells to connect one street to another. Lyon has around four hundred, built in the Renaissance so merchants could reach the Saรดne quickly. During the Second World War the Resistance used them.
Q. When is the Lyon Festival of Lights?
Four days around 8 December. All the shows are free and spread across the city centre. For a winter trip to France, Lyon at that moment is the best it looks all year.
Q. How high does the Aiguille du Midi cable car go?
From Chamonix at 1,035 metres to 3,842 metres in about twenty minutes, holding the world record for vertical ascent. Dress warmly: summer at the bottom is winter at the top.
Q. Where should I stay for the Loire chรขteaux?
Tours. It's 1h19 from Paris on the fastest TGV and works well as a base. Far more efficient than commuting from Paris for one chรขteau a day.
Q. What kind of place is Vichy?
A spa town going back to Roman times, made the premier resort in Europe under Napoleon III. It was also where the government that collaborated with Nazi Germany sat from 1940 to 1944 — chosen because a spa town had plenty of hotels.
Q. How far can I realistically go as a day trip from Paris?
Of the destinations here, Orlรฉans at 1h04. The rest need at least one night if you don't want a day spent travelling. Day-trip destinations are covered in our separate guide.
Paris itself is in our Dissecting Paris series, what fits in a day is in the previous guide, and everything further out is here — widening the circle from Paris outward.
