Everyone researches the rental part in advance — but surprisingly many set off without ever figuring out where they're actually supposed to park for the night. In Europe, parking and sleeping just anywhere is, in most cases, either illegal or legally ambiguous. What is CAMPING-CAR PARK
CAMPING-CAR PARK is the largest private network in Europe connecting dedicated motorhome stopover sites — called aires in French. Most of its locations are in France, with the network also extending into Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and the Netherlands. There are 800+ sites, and the number keeps growing, so rather than us quoting a figure here, it's more accurate to check the current count in the app.
The key point is that these are properly equipped stopover sites — with electricity, fresh water, and wastewater disposal — unlike sleeping out in the wild, where you have none of that. You're not just parking randomly on a patch of gravel; you pull into a marked spot designed for multiple motorhomes to park side by side.
Safety — barriers and anti-fraud measures
Most sites have an automatic barrier. RFID readers at the entrance and exit mean only registered users can get in and out, and there are anti-fraud measures built in to stop people from forcing their way through. In other words, this isn't an open lot anyone can wander into — it's a system where only registered users can open the gate.
Registration itself happens through the app, not a physical card. You get a 6-digit code in the app, enter it at the terminal by the entrance, and the barrier opens. The company states the data is encrypted — that claim comes directly from the company, and we haven't independently verified the encryption itself. What is clear, though, is that the setup is a facility with logged and controlled access, not an open lot anyone can wander into.
How to use it and what it costs
How to use it changed as of March 2025. In the past, you'd buy and use a physical card (PASS'ETAPES). Now, new users are no longer issued a physical card — sign-up only happens through the app's digital pass. If you already have a physical card from before, you can keep using it.

In other words, setting up the app and creating your pass costs €5, and you need to top up at least €10 on top of that before you can use a site for the first time. After that, it's prepaid — each night you stay is deducted from your balance.
Especially important if you've rented
If your rental company doesn't mention it, you can end up starting your trip without even knowing this app exists. When you pick up the vehicle, sign up for the app right then using the payment card you'll be using in that country. That way you avoid getting stuck on the first night outside a stopover site with no signal or a sign-up that won't go through.
European motorhome parking — what's actually legal
This is the real reason this network matters. In Europe, parking and sleeping just anywhere is, in most cases, either illegal or legally ambiguous. France officially bans "camping sauvage" — pitching tents or camping gear outdoors — but quietly sleeping one night inside your motorhome is often tolerated in practice in rural areas and village parking lots. That tolerance narrows, though, near coastlines, nature reserves, and protected heritage sites.

In short, when it comes to "recommendations by route," entering your destination and dates and checking the app's filters and reviews yourself will always be more accurate than anything we could pick for you. A common experience
Finding out you needed the app only after you arrived
We heard about a traveler with a rented motorhome who got stuck outside a stopover site on their first night. The rental company had only explained how to operate the vehicle — nobody mentioned that reserving a site required an app. They ended up downloading the app for the first time right at the barrier, and stood there for a long while signing up, paying, and topping up their balance.
It wasn't a serious problem in the end, but hunting for a signal to install an app in an unfamiliar place after dark is not a fun way to spend your evening.
