This Summer's Heatwave Is Actually Disrupting Travel Plans
France has been experiencing a heatwave that has continued since mid-June this year. Media outlets are describing it as unusually intense for recent years, and landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Mont Saint-Michel have at times suspended operations. French health authorities have recorded a significant number of excess deaths during this period.
For travelers, two things matter. Landmarks can close with little warning, and flights and trains can be delayed. It genuinely happens that people miss the time slot they'd already booked.
- Check the landmark's official account or website the day before you go, to confirm it's actually open.
- Move outdoor plans to morning and late afternoon, and save indoor activities for midday.
- Keep drinking water, and use Paris's free public water fountains — you can find them on map apps.
- Many buildings in France don't have air conditioning. Be sure to confirm cooling when booking accommodation.
If You're Traveling With Elderly Family or Children
A heatwave is more dangerous than it feels. If you get dizzy, get a headache, or stop sweating, get into the shade and rest immediately. One overly ambitious day can ruin an entire trip. Limiting yourself to one landmark a day is also a reasonable choice.

The path of totality passes through northern Spain, so in France it will appear as a partial eclipse covering a substantial portion of the sun. Never Look at It With the Naked Eye
A partial eclipse never reaches a moment of total coverage — meaning there is no point at which it is safe to look with the naked eye. Sunglasses, film, and X-ray film offer no protection.
You need to wear ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses the entire time. If you're viewing through a camera, phone, or binoculars, you also need a dedicated solar filter on the lens. Pointing an unfiltered lens at the sun will damage both your eyes and the equipment.

Something That Happened
We Only Found Out There Was No Air Conditioning After Arriving
We had a guest who stayed a few days in the south of France before coming to Paris. The place in the photos looked lovely and the price was good, but when they arrived, there was no air conditioning — just a single fan.
France traditionally has short, mild summers, so many buildings were never fitted with air conditioning. But the last few years have been different. In the end, they switched accommodation after two days, and paid considerably more since it was peak season.
What they said when they got to our place has stuck with me: "If you can't see an AC unit in the photos, there isn't one."
