DISSECTING PARIS, PART 9

The 8th: Champs-ร‰lysรฉes and the Arc

The most famous avenue, and what happens at its end each evening

The Arc de Triomphe and its radiating avenues
Twelve avenues meet at a single point to form a star

Ask people who've been to Paris how they found the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes and the answer often turns oddly lukewarm. "Well, it was…" and then the sentence trails off.

This part starts by being honest about where that hesitation comes from. Then it argues that the most worthwhile thing in the 8th isn't the avenue at all, but something that happens every evening at half past six.

1. Why the Avenue Disappoints

Let's concede the point first. The Champs-ร‰lysรฉes is the most famous street in Paris and the one visitors disagree about most. Broadly for three reasons.

  • The shops aren't distinctive. It's a run of the same brands you'd find in any large city. You come all the way to Paris to look at signs you know from home.
  • It's wide and full of traffic. None of the density you felt in the lanes of the Marais or the Latin Quarter. A grand avenue is built for vehicles more than for walkers.
  • It's extremely crowded, and largely with people drawn by the fame of the place, so ordinary Parisian life is hard to find here.
Travelling to the most famous street in the world in order to browse shops that exist everywhere in the world. That accounts for most of the lukewarm reviews.
None of which means skipping the 8th. It means putting your expectations at the two ends rather than on the avenue. The Arc de Triomphe stands at one end and Place de la Concorde at the other. Those are the reasons to come.

2. What Happens Beneath the Arc Every Evening

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its flame
A flame lit in 1923 that has never gone out

Most guides present the Arc de Triomphe as somewhere with a good view from the top. Which is true. But the most significant thing about this monument is not above. It's underneath.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: one unidentified serviceman, interred in memory of the 1.3 million French soldiers killed in the First World War.

  • The tomb was installed on 11 November 1920.
  • The flame was first lit on 11 November 1923 and has burned ever since.
  • Every evening at 18:30, a French veterans' association performs the ceremony of rekindling it.
  • The ceremony has taken place every single day since 1923.
  • It is free, open to the public, and lasts about fifteen minutes.

For more than a century, at the same hour, the same act has been repeated without a single omission. Of everything you can watch in Paris, this is the most affecting thing that isn't a tourist attraction.

Time your visit for it. If you're going up the monument anyway, go up in the late afternoon and come down for 18:30 and you'll get both in one trip.

Watch quietly while it proceeds. This is not a performance for visitors; it commemorates the dead, and families and veterans' organisations attend.

3. Going Up the Arc

Napoleon ordered the arch built, but it was completed long after his death. He never saw the finished monument raised in his own name.

Never walk across the roundabout

The Arc stands in the middle of a roundabout where twelve avenues meet. There is no crossing at street level. You must use the underpass.

The entrance is on the pavement on the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes side. Darting between the cars is genuinely dangerous, and the section below explains exactly why.

Book only through the official site

As with Notre-Dame in Part 6, the more famous the monument the more resellers surround it, and the Arc is no exception. The official site is arc-de-triomphe.paris. Sponsored results at the top of a search are frequently not official, so check the address.

The fare structure changes fairly often and sources disagreed. Confirm the price for your specific date on the official site before booking.

4. Place de l'ร‰toile: the Most Feared Circle in Paris

The roundabout enclosing the Arc is Place de l'ร‰toile. ร‰toile is French for star, named for the twelve avenues radiating outward in the shape of one.

It is famous among drivers. Not favourably.

Read this if you're bringing a hire car into Paris

ร‰toile runs on the opposite rule from other French roundabouts.

  • A modern French roundabout gives priority to traffic already circulating, as roundabouts do nearly everywhere.
  • But ร‰toile preserves the older rule: priority goes to traffic entering.

So while you're going round, cars keep pushing in from the side. Drive on your usual instincts here and you will have an accident.

Minor collisions are so frequent that French insurers agreed among themselves to share the cost of any accident here. Both drivers are treated as equally at fault.
They gave up on apportioning blame entirely. Rather than establish fault inside a circle fed by twelve directions, the industry settled on fifty-fifty. Quite possibly the only junction in France where the insurance business simply surrendered.

The conclusion is straightforward. Don't drive in central Paris. Public transport is excellent, parking is miserable, and junctions like this are waiting. Pick the car up on your way out of the city instead.

5. Concorde: Where Name and History Part Company

Place de la Concorde and the Luxor Obelisk
Egypt standing in the middle of the largest square in Paris

The far end of the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes. It is the largest square in Paris, covering roughly 7.6 hectares.

The oldest object in Paris

At its centre stands the Luxor Obelisk. And for anyone who has been reading this series in order, there's a point to make here.

Part 7 went looking for the oldest things in Paris: a Roman amphitheatre from the 1st or 2nd century, a church begun in 558. As it happens, something far older than either stands in the middle of the 8th.

The Luxor Obelisk is Egyptian, from around 1300 BCE. That puts it some 1,400 years ahead of the Roman amphitheatre and more than 1,800 ahead of Saint-Germain-des-Prรฉs. It weighs 230 tonnes and is cut from pink granite.

It was given to France in 1831 by Mehemet Ali, viceroy of Egypt, and raised on this spot in 1836 — a stone column over three thousand years old, floated down the Nile, across the Mediterranean, and up the Seine.

We searched as far back as Roman ruins for the oldest thing in Paris, and the answer had been standing at the end of the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes for three millennia. It isn't even French.

What happened in the square named for harmony

Concorde means harmony or concord. The name came later, and the history of the square is closer to its opposite.

During the Revolution a guillotine stood here. Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were executed on this ground, and Robespierre, who had driven the Terror, eventually died on the same spot. Within a few years, 1,119 people were beheaded in this square.

Today traffic crosses it and visitors photograph the obelisk. Nothing marks the fact. It's a place where standing there knowing makes a rather different experience from standing there not knowing.

6. What's Free in the 8th

The Petit Palais
Free, and quiet. The most underrated stop in the 8th

The 8th has a reputation as an expensive district, but a fair amount of it costs nothing.

The Petit Palais: free collection, no booking

The permanent collection at the Petit Palais is free and requires no reservation. You simply walk in. French art leads, but it also holds Italian and Flemish Renaissance painting, Greek and Roman sculpture, and decorative arts across many periods.

The building itself rewards a look, and the interior courtyard garden especially so. If the Louvre queue has defeated you, or it's raining and you'd rather not spend, this is the answer.

7. Everything on One Straight Line

One last idea, and the most useful one for making sense of the 8th.

Part 5 noted that the Tuileries are the starting point of an axis running dead straight to the Arc de Triomphe. Extend that line all the way and you get this.

Louvre → Tuileries → Place de la Concorde → Champs-ร‰lysรฉes → Arc de Triomphe, and beyond it the towers of La Dรฉfense.

The line was extended piece by piece across centuries. It begins at a royal palace, passes through the square of the Revolution, runs under an imperial arch, and ends in a modern business district. French history laid out in order along a single straight line.

From the top of the Arc you can see it running away in both directions at once. That, more than the view itself, is the reason to go up.

8. A Half-Day on Foot

The 8th runs in a line, so you can't get lost. The one thing that matters is finishing at 18:30.

Concorde to the Arc, ending at 18:30

All on foot · half a day · one paid entry · timing matters

  1. Place de la Concorde — start with a three-thousand-year-old obelisk and the knowledge of what happened underfoot.
  2. Petit Palais — five minutes away. Free collection; rest in the courtyard garden.
  3. Walk the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes — head up toward the Arc. Unless you're shopping, one side of the avenue is plenty.
  4. Up the Arc de Triomphe — cross by the underpass. Go up late in the afternoon and trace the historic axis running both ways.
  5. 18:30, the rekindling of the flame — come down and finish beneath the arch. Free, fifteen minutes.

Skipping the rooftop? Go from step 3 straight to step 5. The heart of the route survives intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes worth visiting?

Lower your expectations for the avenue itself: it's a run of international brand stores on a road full of traffic. But the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde at either end are well worth it.

Q. When is the flame ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe?

Every evening at 18:30. A French veterans' association rekindles the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the ceremony has taken place daily since 1923. It's free and lasts about fifteen minutes.

Q. How much does the Arc de Triomphe cost?

It depends on season and weekday: 22 euros from April to September, but 16 euros on Wednesdays in that period and throughout October to March. Under-18s enter free regardless of nationality.

Q. How do I get across to the Arc de Triomphe?

By the underpass, which is the only way. The Arc sits in the middle of a roundabout fed by twelve avenues, with no surface crossing. The entrance is on the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes pavement.

Q. Should I drive a hire car in central Paris?

No. Place de l'ร‰toile around the Arc still follows the old rule giving priority to entering traffic, the reverse of other roundabouts. Collisions are frequent enough that insurers agreed to treat any accident there as equally the fault of both drivers.

Q. What is the obelisk in Place de la Concorde?

An Egyptian obelisk from Luxor, dating to around 1300 BCE. It was given to France by the viceroy of Egypt in 1831 and erected in 1836. Weighing 230 tonnes in pink granite, it is the oldest object in Paris.

Q. Is there anything free in the 8th?

The permanent collection at the Petit Palais is free and needs no booking. The evening flame ceremony beneath the Arc and Place de la Concorde are also free.

As of — August 2026. The Arc's pricing splits by season and weekday and sources disagreed, so confirm your date on the official site before booking. The evening ceremony has held for over a century and is unlikely to change.

The next part closes out the districts, heading for ground the tourist maps skip: the 13th and its Chinatown, and the 20th with Pรจre-Lachaise.
