The France Car Rental Encyclopedia — From Booking to Breakdowns
The deepest way to explore France's landscapes and small towns is, without question, by car. This encyclopedia gathers everything you need for renting a car in France: booking, insurance, driving, parking, and what to do when something goes wrong. Rules and prices change often, so we re-checked each one while writing this, and flagged anything that differs from the older advice still floating around online.
๐ Chapter 1 · Booking Your Rental and Choosing Insurance
1. Choosing a Car and a Company
- Companies: Hertz, Avis, and Sixt all have global networks. Sixt tends to be cheaper within Europe if value matters most, while Hertz has the best branch coverage.
- For longer trips: if you're staying 21 days or more, look into the Auto France (Peugeot lease) program, which comes with a tax exemption.
- Car size: roads in French small towns are often narrow and winding, so pick the smallest car that fits your group. It makes both driving and parking far easier.
- Transmission: manual is the default in Europe. Automatics cost more and are limited in supply, so always confirm in advance.
2. Types of Insurance
- Basic coverage (CDW, TP, TPL): usually included in the rental rate, but you're still liable for an excess (deductible) if something happens.
- Super CDW / Zero Excess: waives that excess entirely and extends coverage to things basic insurance excludes, like tires and windows. For peace of mind, we'd strongly recommend it.
The excess is much higher than it used to be. You'll often see "from €510–600" quoted, but as of 2026 the realistic range is €800–2,000 for a standard car and around €3,000 for a premium car or minivan — with some companies exceeding €4,000.
At those numbers, Super CDW (from roughly €10–15/day) is well worth it. Also remember that basic coverage typically excludes tires, windows, the undercarriage, and the roof.
๐ฆ Chapter 2 · Essential Traffic Rules on French Roads
1. The Basics
- Drive on the right, with the driver's seat on the left.
- Right of way: pedestrians and cyclists always come first.
2. Speed Limits
| Road type | Normal | In rain |
|---|---|---|
| Urban areas | 50km/h | 50km/h |
| Rural roads (no central divider) | 80km/h (follow signs) | 80km/h |
| Divided highways | 110km/h | 100km/h |
| Motorways | 130km/h | 110km/h |
When visibility drops below 50m, the limit is 50km/h regardless of road type.
Rural roads aren't simply "80km/h everywhere." The nationwide 80km/h limit took effect in 2018, but a 2019 law lets each department raise it back to 90km/h after a local safety review.
As of early 2026, more than 50 of France's 101 departments have restored 90km/h on at least part of their network (about 43 have finished putting up the signs). Since it varies by area, always go by the road signs. Note too that French speed cameras have a very narrow tolerance.
3. Navigating Roundabouts
- Generally, traffic already circulating inside the roundabout has priority.
- If there's a "Cรฉdez le passage" (give way) sign at the entrance, stop and let traffic coming from your left pass before entering.
๐ฆบ Chapter 3 · Equipment You're Required to Carry
Failing to carry these can bring a flat-rate fine of up to €135.
- High-visibility vest (gilet de sรฉcuritรฉ): you must put it on before stepping out of the car, so it has to be stored inside the cabin within reach — not in the boot. It's safest to carry one per passenger, since anyone getting out needs to wear one.
- Warning triangle: placed behind the vehicle in an emergency.
A breathalyzer is no longer required. The rule requiring drivers to carry one, in force since 2012, was formally abolished by decree on 2 June 2020. The official French government portal (service-public.gouv.fr) explicitly states that breathalyzers are not mandatory.
Plenty of older articles online still claim you need an NF-certified breathalyzer, so be careful. That said, the drink-driving limits (0.5g/L blood alcohol, 0.2g/L for new drivers) are unchanged — never drink and drive.
The warning triangle distance is different too. It's often quoted as "100m behind the car," but the official French standard is at least 30m. On fast roads like motorways, further back is safer — and above all, don't put yourself in danger placing it.
⛽ Chapter 4 · Filling Up (and Not Ruining the Engine)
Know Your Fuel
| Fuel | French label | Nozzle color |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel | Gazole / Diesel | Yellow or black |
| Petrol (regular) | Sans Plomb / Essence / SP95-E10 | Green |
| Petrol (premium) | SP98 | Green family (red labeling) |
| Flex-fuel only | E85 | Compatible vehicles only |
Always check your rental agreement or the sticker inside the fuel cap. SP95-E10 contains 10% bioethanol and works in most cars built after 2000. E85 is strictly for flex-fuel vehicles — never mix it up.
Paying
- Motorway service stations usually let you fill first and pay after.
- Unattended city pumps place a card pre-authorization (around €120–150) and then charge only what you actually pumped.
- Supermarket stations (E.Leclerc and similar) run €0.10–0.20 cheaper per liter than motorway stations. On a long trip that adds up.
๐ ฟ️ Chapter 5 · Parking in Cities and the Crit'Air Vignette
Paid Parking
- Anywhere marked "Payant" is paid parking.
- It's usually free outside 9am–7pm on weekdays, plus Sundays and public holidays — but check the sign for "Sauf Dimanches" (except Sundays).
- The EasyPark app works across France and is essentially essential: pay by phone without coins, and extend your parking remotely.
The Crit'Air Vignette (Emissions Sticker)
To enter low-emission zones (ZFE-m) in Paris, Lyon, and other cities, you need an emissions-rating sticker on your windscreen.
With Crit'Air, a lower number means cleaner. You'll sometimes see it described as "only Crit'Air 3 and above may enter," which reads backwards and causes confusion. The actual rule runs the other way.
As of 2026 in the Paris ZFE, Crit'Air 4, 5, and unclassified vehicles are banned outright, and Crit'Air 3 is also restricted. However, Paris is in a grace period until January 2027, so fines aren't currently being issued. Lyon, by contrast, already bans Crit'Air 3 — the rules genuinely differ city to city.
Rental cars are usually new enough that this isn't an issue, but it's worth physically checking that the vignette is on the windscreen when you pick up the car.
๐ฃ️ Chapter 6 · Motorway Tolls (Autoroutes)
- Take a ticket when you enter, and pay by card or cash on exit based on the distance driven.
- Lose the ticket and you'll be charged the maximum fare for that stretch, so keep it somewhere safe.
๐บ️ Chapter 7 · A 10-Day Trip, Paris to Nice
Ten romantic days on the road with "Odette" (our nickname for the car).
Days 1–3 · Paris, and Its Emissions Rules
We picked up the rental in Paris. Central Paris has zones with entry restrictions based on emissions rating, so checking in advance that the car had its vignette mattered. Thanks to the EasyPark app, we could extend our street parking near the Louvre mid-meal without getting up.
Days 4–6 · Loire Valley Chรขteaux and the Joy of Camping
We took the A10 through Orlรฉans toward the Loire Valley. France has over 11,000 campsites, and we picked a four-star one with spotless facilities and a pool. We also spent a night at a gรฎte, a farmhouse B&B — dinner made from local ingredients was unforgettable.
Days 7–8 · Provence Lavender and a Fuel-Light Scare
Heading down past Lyon into Provence, the fuel light came on and briefly panicked us. Luckily we found a supermarket station nearby and filled up on Gazole (diesel) far cheaper than motorway prices. At the tight roundabout in front of the Palais des Papes in Avignon, we kept to the rule of yielding to traffic already inside and got through without trouble.
Days 9–10 · The Blue Sea of Nice, and Home
We reached our final destination, Nice, and drove the coastal road. We'd booked a one-way rental, picking up in Paris and dropping off in Nice — since both branches were within France, we finished the trip without any one-way fee.
๐ฐ Estimated Cost for 10 Days
- Car rental and insurance: roughly $500–$800 (mid-size at $50–80/day, plus Super CDW separately)
- Tolls: about €80–100 for Paris to Nice (varies by route)
- Parking: €10–20/day on average (using EasyPark and free time windows)
These figures are estimates based on a hypothetical trip. Actual costs vary considerably by season, vehicle class, how far ahead you book, and whether it's one-way — get a live quote when you book. One-way fees can also apply depending on the company and route.
๐จ Chapter 8 · Accidents and Emergencies
1. Immediate Steps
Put on your hi-vis vest before getting out, then place the warning triangle behind the car (at least 30m, further on motorways). If you can, move to safety behind the guardrail before making calls.
2. Emergency Numbers
| Number | Use |
|---|---|
| 112 | All emergencies (Europe-wide). Free, and operators can respond in English |
| 17 | Police |
| 15 | Medical emergencies (SAMU) |
| 18 | Fire brigade |
| 114 | For deaf and hard-of-hearing callers (text/fax) |
On motorways, the orange emergency phones along the shoulder pinpoint your location automatically. The SOS Autoroute app also sends your GPS position.
3. Keep Your Paperwork
If you're treated at a hospital, hold onto the treatment record (feuille de soins) and the prescription (ordonnance) — you'll need both to claim on insurance.
4. Notify the Rental Company
Call the rental company's customer service immediately after any incident. If another vehicle is involved, fill out the "constat amiable" together — the standard European accident report form, usually found in the rental car's glovebox.
We hope this encyclopedia makes your French road trip a safe and happy one. Bon voyage!

One thing worth adding: there are real reported cases of someone throwing a small rock at your car to startle you with a loud bang, then robbing the vehicle the moment you pull over and step out. It's been reported especially often along the France–Spain border stretches.
If this happens, the first rule is to keep the doors locked and stay in the car. Even if it felt like you hit something, don't inspect it on the spot — drive on to a busy rest area or petrol station and check there. Instead, get in the habit of photographing your surroundings and the license plates of any vehicles nearby from inside the car, then reporting it. Emergencies are 112, police are 17.
If you've experienced or heard about something similar on a particular stretch of road, share it in the comments — it genuinely helps other travelers.
