PART 1

공항에 내려서 숙소까지, 그리고 교통권

샤를드골 공항에서 시내로

• RER B선이 가장 빠르고 쌉니다. 도심까지 40분 안팎입니다. 다만 시내용 승차권으로는 공항 구간을 탈 수 없습니다. 공항 전용 승차권을 따로 사거나 전 구역 정기권이 있어야 합니다. 이걸 모르고 개찰구에서 막히는 분이 많습니다.
• 택시는 정찰제입니다. 공항과 파리 시내 사이는 미터기가 아니라 고정 요금으로 계산하고, 센강 북쪽(우안)과 남쪽(좌안)에 따라 금액이 다릅니다. 요금은 승강장에 게시되어 있으니 타기 전에 확인하세요. 반드시 공식 승강장에서 타시고, 터미널 안에서 말을 거는 기사는 따라가지 마세요.
• 밤늦게 도착하면 RER B는 권하지 않습니다. 운행이 끊기는 시간대가 있고, 짐이 많으면 환승이 부담스럽습니다. 숙소에 미리 픽업을 요청하시는 편이 낫습니다.

RER B선 소매치기 주의

공항 노선이라 여행객이 표적이 됩니다. 가장 흔한 수법은 동전 떨어뜨리기입니다. 한 사람이 발밑에 동전을 흘리고, 주우려 고개를 숙인 사이 다른 사람이 가방을 엽니다.

원칙은 하나입니다. 낯선 사람이 말을 걸거나 무언가를 흘리면 가방부터 잡으세요. 도와주려 몸을 숙이는 그 순간이 노림수입니다. 가방은 몸 앞으로 메고, 여권과 지갑은 겉주머니에 두지 마세요.

교통권, 어느 쪽이 이득일까

• 주간권은 요일이 전부입니다. 무슨 요일에 사든 월요일부터 일요일까지만 유효합니다. 목요일에 사도 그 주 일요일이면 끝납니다. 월요일이나 화요일에 도착하는 일정일 때 가장 이득입니다.
• 주간권은 실물 카드로 받으려면 증명사진이 필요합니다. 사진과 이름이 없으면 검표 때 문제가 됩니다. 휴대폰 앱으로 사면 사진은 필요 없습니다.
• 종이 티켓은 이제 팔지 않습니다. 나비고 카드나 모바일 앱을 쓰는 것이 기본이 되었습니다.

목요일에 주간권을 산 손님

일주일 일정으로 오신 분이 도착하자마자 주간권을 끊으셨습니다. 목요일이었습니다. 좋은 걸 샀다며 좋아하셨는데, 일요일 밤에 지하철을 타려다 개찰구에서 막히셨습니다.

주간권은 산 날부터 7일이 아니라 그 주 월요일부터 일요일까지입니다. 목요일에 사면 나흘치 값으로 나흘을 쓰는 게 아니라, 일주일치 값을 내고 나흘을 쓰는 셈이 됩니다. 남은 사흘은 다시 표를 사셔야 했습니다.

그 뒤로는 체크인하실 때 도착 요일부터 여쭤봅니다. 목요일 이후에 오시는 분께는 주간권 대신 회수권을 권해드립니다.

그래서 — 주간권은 도착 요일이 결정합니다. 월·화 도착이면 사세요. 목요일 넘어 도착하시면 회수권이 낫습니다.

겪었던 일

발밑에 동전이 떨어졌을 때

공항에서 오시던 손님이 RER B 안에서 겪은 일입니다. 발밑에 동전 몇 개가 떨어지는 소리가 났고, 앞에 서 있던 사람이 미안하다는 표정으로 줍기 시작했습니다. 반사적으로 같이 몸을 숙이려는 순간, 옆에 있던 다른 손님이 팔을 잡아 세웠다고 합니다.

고개를 들어보니 뒤에 서 있던 사람이 이미 캐리어 앞주머니 쪽에 손을 대고 있었습니다. 눈이 마주치자 아무 일 없었다는 듯 다음 역에서 내렸다고 합니다.

잃어버린 건 없었지만, 도착하셔서 한참을 그 얘기만 하셨습니다. 무서웠던 건 도둑이 아니라 자기가 너무 자연스럽게 몸을 숙이려 했다는 것이었다고요.

그래서 — 낯선 사람이 뭔가를 흘리면 줍지 말고 가방부터 잡으세요. 친절이 필요한 순간이 아닙니다.

줄 서지 않고 명소 즐기기

에펠탑 · 아침이 전부입니다

• 트로카데로 광장은 오전 7시 30분에서 8시 사이가 가장 조용합니다. 사진 찍는 분들만 드문드문 있고, 대리석 광장에 아침 햇살이 반사되는 시간대입니다.
• 광장만 보고 돌아서지 마세요. 카모엥 거리(Avenue de Camoens) 계단에서 보는 각도가 트로카데로보다 좋다는 분이 많습니다.
• 내려오는 길에 비라케임 다리(Pont de Bir-Hakeim)를 건너보세요. 철제 아치 아래로 에펠탑이 들어오는, 영화에 자주 나온 그 앵글입니다.

루브르 · 입구를 잘못 고르면 한 시간을 버립니다

• 리슐리외 통로는 줄이 짧지만 아무나 못 들어갑니다. 단체, 뮤지엄 패스 소지자, 루브르 회원, 사전 예약 프로그램 참가자 전용입니다. 여기에 해당되시면 가장 빠른 길이고, 아니라면 헛걸음입니다.
• 일반 티켓이라면 카루젤 뒤 루브르 지하 입구가 유리 피라미드보다 대기가 짧은 편입니다.
• 시간 지정 온라인 예약은 사실상 필수입니다. 성수기에는 예약 없이 가면 입장이 어렵습니다.

뮤지엄 패스, 사기 전에 이것부터

패스가 있어도 예약은 따로 해야 합니다. 루브르와 베르사유는 패스 소지자도 시간대 예약이 필수입니다. 각 공식 홈페이지에서 '뮤지엄 패스 소지자' 항목을 고르면 결제 금액이 0원으로 처리됩니다.

패스를 사기 전에 루브르 예약 자리부터 확인하세요. 성수기에는 몇 주 전에 마감됩니다. 자리가 없으면 패스가 있어도 못 들어갑니다.

휴관일도 미리 보세요. 월요일은 오르세와 베르사유, 화요일은 루브르와 오랑주리가 쉽니다. 그래서 패스는 수요일에서 일요일 사이에 쓰는 편이 손해가 적습니다.

겪었던 일

패스는 샀는데 루브르에 못 들어간 신혼부부

신혼여행으로 오신 부부가 공항에서 뮤지엄 패스를 사 오셨습니다. 다음 날 아침 루브르에 가시겠다기에 예약은 하셨냐고 여쭸더니, 표정이 굳으셨습니다. 패스가 곧 입장권인 줄 아셨던 겁니다.

그 자리에서 함께 홈페이지를 열어봤습니다. 그 주 예약은 이미 다 차 있었습니다. 이틀 뒤 오후 자리가 하나 남아 있어서 겨우 잡았는데, 원래는 그날 근교에 가실 계획이었습니다. 일정을 통째로 다시 짜셨습니다.

패스 소지자 예약은 돈이 들지 않습니다. 홈페이지에서 티켓 종류를 고를 때 '뮤지엄 패스 소지자'를 선택하면 결제 금액이 0원으로 뜹니다. 그런데 이 항목이 있다는 걸 모르시는 분이 정말 많습니다.

그래서 — 패스를 사기 전에 루브르 홈페이지부터 여세요. 가실 날짜에 자리가 있는지 먼저 확인하고, 그다음에 사셔도 늦지 않습니다.

몽마르트르 · 걷지 않고 오르는 법

• 계단이 부담되면 푸니쿨라를 타세요. 지하철 티켓으로 그대로 탑승해 사크레쾨르 앞까지 올라갑니다.
• 또는 2호선 Anvers역 부근에서 40번 버스를 타면 테르트르 광장 가까이에서 내립니다.
• 테르트르 광장에서는 초상화 호객을 조심하세요. 먼저 다가와 그려주겠다고 한 뒤 수백 유로를 요구하는 사례가 꾸준히 보고됩니다. 원치 않으면 처음부터 분명히 거절하시는 게 좋습니다.

오페라 가르니에와 디즈니랜드

• 오페라 가르니에는 공연 직전에 시야 제한석과 입석이 매표소에 나오는 경우가 있습니다. 값이 내부 관람료보다 쌀 때도 있어서, 공연도 보고 그 화려한 내부도 함께 보는 셈이 됩니다. 청년과 시니어 대상 할인도 있으니 공식 안내를 확인해 보세요.
• 디즈니랜드는 공휴일이 아닌 화요일에서 목요일이 가장 한산합니다. 개장 30분 전에 입구에 도착해 문 열자마자 인기 시설로 직행하는 것이 하루 전체의 대기 시간을 좌우합니다. 같은 놀이기구가 오전에는 30분, 오후에는 두 시간을 기다리는 일이 흔합니다.

쇼핑과 면세 환급, 순서만 지키면 됩니다

백화점에서

• 관광객 쿠폰을 챙겨 가세요. 갤러리 라파예트와 쁘렝땅 모두 외국인 관광객 대상 할인과 사은품 행사를 수시로 합니다. 다만 내용과 기간이 자주 바뀝니다. 묵으시는 숙소 프런트에 물어보시면 그때 유효한 것을 받으실 수 있습니다.
• 여권 원본을 꼭 가져가세요. 사본이나 사진으로는 면세 서류 작성도, 관광객 혜택 등록도 되지 않습니다.
• 같은 백화점 안에서 같은 날 여러 매장에서 산 금액은 합산됩니다. 한 곳에서 기준 금액을 못 채우겠다 싶으면 층을 옮겨 더 사고 한 번에 신청하세요.

택스 리펀 · 이 순서를 지키세요

• 공항에서는 짐을 부치기 전에 처리하세요. 세관이 물건을 보자고 할 수 있어서, 산 물건은 승인이 끝날 때까지 들고 계시는 편이 안전합니다.
• 공항의 PABLO 무인 단말에서 서류의 바코드를 스캔합니다. 화면에 초록색 OK가 떠야 끝난 겁니다. 빨간색이 뜨면 옆 세관 창구에서 직접 확인받으세요.
• 백화점에서 현금으로 미리 환급받았더라도 공항 스캔은 반드시 해야 합니다. 이걸 빼먹으면 나중에 카드로 그 금액이 다시 청구됩니다. 가장 흔한 실수입니다.
• 줄이 길거나 세관 확인이 붙으면 시간이 훅 갑니다. 출발 세 시간 전 공항 도착을 권해드립니다.

관세는 숫자를 믿지 마세요

유럽산 제품은 한국과 EU의 FTA 원산지 신고를 영수증이나 인보이스에 받아두면 한국 입국 시 관세에서 유리할 수 있습니다.

다만 적용 조건과 한도는 물품과 금액에 따라 다르고, 면세 한도와는 별개의 제도입니다. 인터넷에 도는 금액 기준을 그대로 믿지 마시고 관세청 안내로 확인하시는 것이 정확합니다. 잘못 알고 갔다가 세금을 더 내는 경우가 있습니다.

겪었던 일

환급받은 돈이 다시 빠져나갔습니다

백화점에서 현금으로 환급을 받으신 손님이 계셨습니다. 그 자리에서 유로를 손에 쥐어주니 다 끝난 줄 아셨던 겁니다. 공항에서는 짐 부치고 바로 게이트로 가셨습니다.

한 달쯤 뒤에 연락이 왔습니다. 카드 명세서에 모르는 금액이 청구되어 있다고요. 백화점에서 받아 가신 그 환급액이었습니다.

백화점 현금 환급은 "공항에서 세관 승인을 받는다"는 조건으로 미리 주는 돈입니다. 승인이 확인되지 않으면 회수됩니다. PABLO 단말에 서류를 스캔하고 초록색 OK를 보는 것까지가 절차입니다. 30초면 끝나는 일이었습니다.

그래서 — 현금으로 미리 받으셨어도 공항 스캔은 반드시 하세요. 이게 면세에서 가장 흔하고 가장 아까운 실수입니다.

PART 4

2026년 여름, 지금 파리에 오신다면

대중교통 운행 중단 (이번 여름 한정)

지하철 13호선 북부 구간(Saint-Denis Universite ~ La Fourche) 7월 31일부터 8월 17일까지

RER B 파리 북역과 남부 구간 사이 7월 25일부터 8월 16일까지

RER B는 공항을 오가는 노선이라 입출국 일정에 직접 영향을 줍니다. 기간과 구간은 조정될 수 있으니 이동 전날 RATP 또는 Ile-de-France Mobilites 공지를 꼭 확인하세요.

8월 12일, 파리에서 부분일식을 봅니다

• 2026년 8월 12일 저녁, 파리에서 태양의 상당 부분이 달에 가려지는 부분일식이 있습니다. 해가 낮게 걸린 시간대라 서쪽 하늘이 트인 곳이 좋습니다. 몽마르트르 언덕이나 강변처럼 시야가 열린 자리를 미리 잡아두세요.
• 맨눈으로 절대 보지 마세요. 선글라스, 필름, 스마트폰 화면 모두 위험합니다. 짧은 시간에도 눈에 영구 손상이 올 수 있습니다. 반드시 일식 관측용 안경(ISO 인증)을 쓰셔야 합니다. 현지에서 구하기 어려울 수 있으니 한국에서 미리 챙겨 오시길 권합니다.
• 카메라나 휴대폰으로 찍으실 때도 전용 필터를 끼워야 합니다. 렌즈로 태양을 겨누면 기기 센서가 상합니다.

날씨와 숙소

• 한여름 파리는 햇볕이 강하고 낮 기온이 30도를 넘는 날이 있습니다. 모자와 물 한 병은 챙기세요. 반대로 소나기가 갑자기 쏟아지기도 해서 얇은 방수 겉옷이 하나 있으면 편합니다.
• 파리 옛 건물에는 엘리베이터가 없는 경우가 많습니다. 짐이 많으시면 예약 전에 몇 층인지, 엘리베이터가 있는지 반드시 확인하세요. 캐리어를 들고 6층까지 오르는 일은 생각보다 큰일입니다.
• 이동 효율만 보면 중심가가 유리하지만, 값이 오릅니다. 지하철 두세 정거장 떨어진 동네가 값과 편의의 균형이 가장 좋습니다.

28인치 캐리어와 엘리베이터 없는 6층

파리에 오시기 전 며칠 다른 숙소에 묵으셨던 손님이 계셨습니다. 사진으로 볼 땐 창밖 풍경이 예뻤고 값도 좋았는데, 도착해서야 엘리베이터가 없다는 걸 아셨습니다. 6층이었습니다.

한국식으로 6층이면 우리 기준 7층입니다. 프랑스는 1층을 0층으로 세거든요. 28인치 캐리어 두 개를 들고 나선형 계단을 올라가는 데 20분이 걸렸다고 하셨습니다.

파리 도심 건물은 대부분 100년이 훌쩍 넘었습니다. 엘리베이터가 없는 게 특이한 경우가 아니라 오히려 흔한 쪽입니다. 있더라도 캐리어 하나와 사람 하나가 겨우 들어가는 크기인 곳도 많습니다.

그래서 — 예약 전에 두 가지만 물어보세요. 몇 층인지, 엘리베이터가 있는지. 프랑스식 층수인지도 함께 확인하시면 확실합니다.

공항 가는 날 아침에 알게 된 운행 중단

귀국하시는 날이었습니다. 아침 비행기라 새벽에 나가시려고 전날 밤 RER 시간표를 확인하셨는데, 그때야 해당 구간 공사로 열차가 다니지 않는다는 안내를 보셨습니다.

대체 버스가 운행되고는 있었지만 소요 시간이 더 걸렸습니다. 결국 새벽에 택시를 부르셨고, 예정에 없던 지출이 생겼습니다.

파리는 여름마다 노선별로 돌아가며 공사를 합니다. 특히 공항을 오가는 RER B가 걸리면 입출국 일정에 바로 영향이 옵니다. 저희도 여름에는 손님 체크아웃 전날 한 번씩 노선 상황을 확인해 알려드립니다.

PART 1

From the Airport to Your Room — and Your Transit Pass

From Charles de Gaulle Airport to the City

• RER B is the fastest and cheapest option. It's about 40 minutes to the city center. However, a standard city-zone ticket won't cover the airport segment. You need a dedicated airport ticket or an all-zone pass. Not knowing this is what gets a lot of people stuck at the turnstile.
• Taxis run on a flat rate. Between the airport and central Paris, it's a fixed fare rather than a meter, and the amount differs depending on whether you're headed to the Right Bank (north of the Seine) or Left Bank (south). Rates are posted at the taxi stand, so check before you get in. Always take a taxi from the official stand, and never follow a driver who approaches you inside the terminal.
• If you're arriving late at night, we don't recommend RER B. Service stops running at a certain hour, and transfers get tough with a lot of luggage. It's better to arrange a pickup with your accommodation in advance.

Watch for Pickpockets on RER B

Because it's an airport line, travelers are targeted. The most common trick is the coin drop. One person drops coins near your feet, and while you bend down to help pick them up, another person opens your bag.

There's one rule: if a stranger talks to you or drops something, grab your bag first. The moment you instinctively bend down to help is exactly what they're counting on. Wear your bag on your front, and never keep your passport or wallet in an outer pocket.

Which Transit Pass Actually Pays Off

• The weekly pass runs by calendar week, no matter when you buy it. It's valid Monday through Sunday regardless of the day you purchase it. Buy it on a Thursday and it still ends that Sunday. It pays off the most when you arrive on a Monday or Tuesday.
• The physical weekly pass card needs a passport photo. Without a photo and name on it, you can run into trouble during a ticket check. Buying through the mobile app skips the photo requirement.
• Paper tickets aren't sold anymore. A Navigo card or the mobile app is now the standard way to ride.

Something that actually happened

The Guest Who Bought a Weekly Pass on a Thursday

A guest here for a week bought a weekly pass the moment she arrived. It was a Thursday. She was thrilled with her purchase — until Sunday night, when she got stuck at the turnstile trying to ride the metro.

The weekly pass isn't seven days from the date you bought it — it runs Monday through Sunday of that calendar week. Buy it on Thursday, and instead of paying for four days and using four days, you pay full weekly price and only get to use four of them. She had to buy a new ticket for the remaining three days.

Since then, we ask about arrival day right at check-in. For anyone arriving after Thursday, we recommend a top-up ticket card instead of the weekly pass.

The takeaway — Your arrival day decides whether the weekly pass is worth it. If you're arriving Monday or Tuesday, buy it. Arriving after Thursday, go with a top-up card instead.

Something that actually happened

The Coins That Dropped by Her Feet

This happened to a guest riding RER B in from the airport. She heard the sound of coins dropping near her feet, and the person standing in front of her started apologetically picking them up. Just as she was reflexively about to bend down too, another passenger beside her grabbed her arm and stopped her.

When she looked up, the person standing behind her already had a hand near the front pocket of her suitcase. When their eyes met, he got off at the next station as if nothing had happened.

Nothing was stolen, but once she arrived, that's all she could talk about. What scared her most wasn't the thief — it was how naturally she'd almost bent down to help.

The takeaway — If a stranger drops something, don't pick it up — grab your bag first. It's not a moment that calls for kindness.

PART 2

Enjoying the Major Sights Without the Lines

Eiffel Tower — It's All About the Morning

• Place du Trocadéro is quietest between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. Only a handful of photographers around, and it's when the morning light reflects off the marble plaza.
• Don't stop at just the plaza. Many say the view from the steps on Avenue de Camoëns beats Trocadéro itself.
• On your way down, cross Pont de Bir-Hakeim. It's the angle you've seen in countless films — the Eiffel Tower framed beneath the iron arches.

The Louvre — Pick the Wrong Entrance and You Lose an Hour

• The Richelieu passage has a short line, but not everyone can use it. It's reserved for groups, museum pass holders, Louvre members, and participants in advance-booking programs. If you qualify, it's the fastest way in — if not, it's a wasted trip.
• With a regular ticket, the underground entrance via the Carrousel tends to have a shorter wait than the glass pyramid.
• A timed online reservation is essentially mandatory. During peak season, getting in without one is difficult.

Before You Buy a Museum Pass, Know This First

Even with a pass, you still need a separate reservation. Both the Louvre and Versailles require a timed-entry slot even for pass holders. On each official website, selecting the "museum pass holder" option processes your booking at €0.

Check Louvre availability before you buy the pass. Slots fill up weeks ahead during peak season. If there's no availability, having the pass doesn't get you in.

Check closure days too. The Musée d'Orsay and Versailles are closed Mondays; the Louvre and the Musée de l'Orangerie are closed Tuesdays. That's why using the pass Wednesday through Sunday tends to be the safer bet.

Something that actually happened

The Honeymoon Couple Who Had a Pass But Couldn't Get Into the Louvre

A couple on their honeymoon bought a museum pass right at the airport. When they mentioned they planned to visit the Louvre the next morning, we asked if they'd made a reservation — their faces fell. They'd assumed the pass was the ticket itself.

We pulled up the website together on the spot. That week was already fully booked. We managed to find one afternoon slot two days later, but they'd originally planned a day trip outside the city that day. They ended up reshuffling their whole itinerary.

Reservations for pass holders don't cost anything. When choosing a ticket type on the website, selecting "museum pass holder" brings the total to €0. But a surprising number of people have no idea this option even exists.

The takeaway — Open the Louvre's website before you buy the pass. Confirm there's availability for your date first, then buy — it's not too late even then.

Montmartre — How to Get Up Without Walking

• If the stairs feel like too much, take the funicular. It accepts your regular metro ticket and takes you right up to Sacré-Cœur.
• Or catch bus 40 near the Anvers station on line 2, which drops you close to Place du Tertre.
• Be careful of portrait-sketching touts at Place du Tertre. There are steady reports of artists approaching visitors, offering to draw them, then demanding hundreds of euros afterward. If you're not interested, it's best to decline clearly from the start.

Opéra Garnier and Disneyland

• At Opéra Garnier, restricted-view and standing tickets sometimes become available at the box office right before a performance. The price can be cheaper than a standard interior tour, which means you get to see a show and that lavish interior at once. There are youth and senior discounts too, so check the official site.
• Disneyland is quietest Tuesday through Thursday, outside of holidays. Arriving 30 minutes before opening and heading straight to the popular rides the moment the gates open determines how the rest of your day's wait times go. The same ride can mean a 30-minute wait in the morning and two hours in the afternoon.

Shopping and Tax Refunds — Just Follow the Right Order

At the Department Store

• Always bring your original passport. A copy or a photo won't work for filling out tax-refund paperwork or registering for tourist perks.
• Within the same department store, purchases from multiple counters on the same day get combined. If you're short of the minimum at one counter, go up a floor, buy more, and file it all as one refund.

Tax Refunds — Follow This Order

• At the airport, handle the refund before you check your bags. Customs may ask to see the items, so it's safer to keep your purchases with you until the approval is complete.
• At the airport, scan your document's barcode at a PABLO self-service kiosk. It's not done until you see a green OK on screen. If it shows red, get it verified in person at the customs counter nearby.
• Even if you already got a cash refund in advance at the department store, you still must scan at the airport. Skip this and that amount gets charged back to your card later. It's the single most common mistake.
• Long lines or a customs check can eat up time fast. We recommend arriving at the airport three hours before departure.

Don't Trust Numbers You See Online for Customs

For European-made goods, getting an FTA origin declaration between Korea and the EU on your receipt or invoice can work in your favor for customs duty when you enter Korea.

However, the conditions and limits vary by item and amount, and this is a separate system from the duty-free allowance. Don't take numbers you see floating around online at face value — check with Korea Customs for the accurate figures. Some travelers end up paying more tax after going in with the wrong assumption.

A guest received a cash refund at a department store. The moment euros were placed in her hand, she assumed she was done. At the airport, she checked her bags and went straight to the gate.

About a month later, she reached out to us. Her card statement showed an unfamiliar charge — it was the exact refund amount she'd received at the store.

A department store cash refund is money advanced on the condition that you get customs approval at the airport. If that approval never gets confirmed, they claw it back. Scanning your document at a PABLO kiosk and seeing that green OK is the step that completes the process. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds.

• On the evening of August 12, 2026, Paris will see a partial solar eclipse, with a significant portion of the sun covered by the moon. Since the sun will be low in the sky, a spot with a clear western view is best. Stake out an open sightline early, like Montmartre hill or along the riverbank.
• Never look directly at it with the naked eye. Sunglasses, film, and phone screens are all dangerous. Even brief exposure can cause permanent eye damage. You must wear ISO-certified eclipse glasses. These can be hard to find locally, so we recommend bringing a pair from Korea.
• If you're shooting with a camera or phone, you'll need a dedicated solar filter too. Pointing an unfiltered lens at the sun can damage the device's sensor.

Weather and Accommodation

• Midsummer Paris has days when the sun is intense and afternoon temperatures top 30°C. Bring a hat and a bottle of water. On the flip side, sudden downpours happen too, so a light rain jacket comes in handy.
• Older Paris buildings often don't have elevators. If you're traveling with a lot of luggage, always confirm the floor and elevator situation before you book. Hauling a suitcase up to the 6th floor is a bigger deal than it sounds.
• Central neighborhoods are more convenient for getting around, but they cost more. A neighborhood two or three metro stops out tends to offer the best balance of price and convenience.

A guest had stayed a few nights elsewhere before coming to us. The photos showed a lovely view and the price looked good — but only after arriving did she learn there was no elevator. It was the 6th floor.

In Korean floor-counting, the 6th floor there is our 7th floor — France counts the ground floor as floor 0. She said it took 20 minutes to haul two 28-inch suitcases up the spiral staircase.

Most buildings in central Paris are well over a century old. Not having an elevator isn't the unusual case — it's actually the more common one. And even where one exists, plenty are barely big enough for one suitcase and one person.

The takeaway — Ask two things before you book: what floor it's on, and whether there's an elevator. Confirming whether it's counted the French way makes it airtight.
